Mahjong has been bringing people together for centuries first in the teahouses and trade routes of imperial China, where its 144 tiles carried the symbolism of a civilization. And later in the living rooms and card tables of America, where a group of Jewish American women reimagined it as something entirely their own. Two communities, one beloved game, and a tradition that has only grown richer with time.
